Message From the Principal

Welcome to George Washington Carver Elementary School, GWCES!
It is with great excitement and deep gratitude that I welcome you to our school community, where every child is nurtured, every voice matters and every day brings new opportunities for growth. Whether you are a current family or a visitor exploring our page, I am honored to serve as your principal and continue my journey with the incredible Carver family. My commitment to student-centered leadership is shaped by my history in St. Mary’s County, including my time as Academic Dean right here at Carver and my work as a founding member of the STEM Academy at Great Mills High School.
Our community is reaching new heights! We are thrilled to share that GWCES has been named a National ESEA Distinguished School. This prestigious honor, awarded to only up to two schools per state each year, recognizes our exceptional progress in closing performance gaps. These strong results are due to the dedication of our amazing staff, students and families coupled with our evidenced based educational programs. We are proud to serve as a model for school improvement across the state.
At Carver, our mission is to ensure every student has the tools they need to reach their highest potential. We achieve this by committing to a safe, nurturing and high-quality learning environment where we proudly S.O.A.R.:
- Safe, helpful, and use good judgement
- Own our behavior and accept responsibility for our actions
- Achieve greatness by staying on task, working hard and completing our assignments
- Respect ourself, others and our community.
As a Title I school, we utilize federal funding to provide extra resources that directly contribute to our students' success. These include targeted academic support in reading and math, Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) programs dedicated to the "whole child," and innovative family engagement materials to support learning at home.
We believe that education is a team effort involving students, teachers and families. I warmly invite you to partner with us by attending our annual meetings and numerous events as well as provide Stakeholder input. Together, we will celebrate your child’s achievements throughout the year.
I look forward to meeting you and watching our Carver Eagles S.O.A.R.!
With Carver Eagle Pride,
Ms. Rhonda Morgan Principal, GWCES
